Writer: Happy Little PlanetHappy Little Planet

Who would have thought I would be passionate about doing Laundry! its the last thing that would be my early morning motivator but I am a mother of a beautiful girl who does create a lot of washing and yes we all have to wash our cloths and do the mundane chores. During the summer I found myself become more passionate about changing to a greener alternative and welcome in ..... Soap Nuts! These little shells are starting to make a name for them selves as people shift to a greener way to do laundry!

What are Soap Nuts?

So, what are Soapnuts I hear you say - they are a berry shell that naturally contains soap. They grow on the Sapindus mukorossi (Soap Berry) tree in the Himalayas.

The natural soap found in these berries is called saponin. Saponin is a natural cleaner that works as a surfactant, breaking the surface tension of the water to penetrate the fibers of your clothing, lifting stains from the fabric, and leaving dirt suspended in the water that is rinsed away.

Soap nuts are both gentle on your cloths and your SKIN - so if you have sensitive skin, eczema, allergies or psoriasis then you may want to try your natural friend the soap nut.

WARNING - Do not judge the Soap nut!! unlike the chemical detergents they have artificial foaming agents, Soap nuts do not produce a lot of bubbles but that does not mean they do not work! The big industry have used the visual idea of foam as the power of getting things clean BUT that's just not true!!
